Some people get the idea veterans organizations are just clubs where a bunch men sit around smoking, drinking and telling war stories.
Tom "Peanut" Stanfield has been one of the most beloved members since he was at sea during the 1950s and was given a membership in VFW 4848 by founder Blackie Reynolds.  He is a former VFW 4848 commander, but even more importantly a welcome face any time he came to the post.
He became ill with cancer and was advised by his doctor to move from his apartment with steps to one with no steps.  His wife, Katie, planned to hire a mover, but members of the VFW wouldn't hear of it.  At 9 AM on Saturday morning, 16 members, wives and friends met at the post and formed a convoy of cars and trucks to move them.
Everything was packed, loaded for the trip and then unloaded and set up in four hours.  This was a case of veterans taking care of another veteran.
