August 2002

Over half a century ago I became interested in politics and have enjoyed many campaigns.  There was Dwight Eisenhower running against Adlai Stevenson, Jack Kennedy and Richard Nixon, and lots more large and small over the years.  In the past decade, Zach Wamp went to the House of Representatives over Ron Button,  Fred Thompson, Bill Frist, Don Sundquist and others.  Each campaign has its own fascination.

No candidate has inspired me more than Jim Henry in his quest for the Republican nomination as governor of Tennessee.  He is a one of a kind.  Mature leader.  Extremely intelligent and alert on an array of issues.  He had the looks of a governor and could well fill the role.  Everyone he met was won over.  He just couldn't see enough people.

He lost the primary.  But there was no shame in his loss.  He had some of the best people around him.  I enjoyed every minute of the campaign with the candidate who had so much to offer.

A letter of appreciation from Jim and Pat Henry:

 August 5, 2002

 To my friends and supporters:

Losing isn’t easy. But it’s a whole lot easier to be with those you love and respect when it happens. That includes each and every one of you, and countless nameless supporters from Tri-Cities to Memphis who stood with us.

We know our cause was just. Our efforts to bring our state into an era of fiscal solvency, stability and mutual trust between government and people was not in vain. The issues we brought to the table will demand attention by the executive and legislative branches of government.

Together we ran an election to be proud of. We are thankful especially to the editors, newsmen, city and state officials who gave their endorsement to the Jim Henry Campaign. The countless volunteers who were there when needed will always have our undying gratitude.

We had the best of the best of the Republican Party on our side. There just wasn’t enough of us.

We like what George Washington said about eternal vigilance being the price of liberty. We must maintain that same vigilance in the directions of our Republican Party, our state and our country.

We must remember that today is the first day of the rest of our lives. Let us all work together to make Tennessee even better. Everyone will benefit.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Yours always,

Jim and Pat Henry

I Admire Jim Henry
